- One of best for bright orange flowers. It comes up a little later in spring so mark where you have it so you won't plant something else in it's place. It's blooms are loved by the monarch butterfly and others too. Then later, after the seed pods have formed, the monarch eggs hatch and the caterpillars eat the leaves on the plant. Don't worry, the loss of some leaves won't harm the plant. Watch carefully for the caterpillars to form a crysalis and then see the monarch butterfly hatch. The plants grows a little wider every year and are very long-lived. They prefer good drainage and don't like being crowded.
