Plant Description

Native to the southeast from Texas to North Carolina, Vaccinium ashei is well adapted to the hot, humid summers and mild winters of the southeast. 'Tifblue' was introduced in Georgia in 1955 and for many years was the standard by which all other blueberries were judged. It is an upright grower to 8 feet by 6 feet. Fruits ripen in mid summer. For best pollination, plant several different varieties. Blueberries are almost a perfect landscape shrub. They are easy to grow. They are very attractive when in flower and during the summer, and they have great fall foliage color before the leaves fall off. Plus, of course, the berries are excellent tasting and very good for you. Blueberries prefer full sun and good, acidic soil that is moist but well drained. Every home needs to have a few different kinds of blueberries planted just outside the kitchen door!
