Plant Description

‘Northwind’ is an olive-green to blue-green leaved, very upright, clumping switchgrass. It forms a compact, narrow, erect 4-5 foot tall clump of foliage that is topped in late summer with airy panicles of yellow flowers which form a haze over the middle of the clump. In fall, leaves and flowers turn a nice beige and are attractive and sturdy over the winter. Use ‘Northwind’ where you need the vertical shape. Full sun and average soil is preferable, and it does well in rain gardens. It is the Perennial Plant Association’s perennial of the year for 2014. Grow with other tall plants like ‘Gateway’ Joe Pye, seashore mallow, and ‘Henry Eilers’ sweet coneflower.
