Plant Description

Here is the latest Baptisia selection from Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden. It is the result of promiscuity between white and blue Baptisias, probably. In any case, it is a vigorous, vase shaped clumper growing 3’ to 4’ tall and 4’ wide. In early summer, the plant covers itself with inflorescences 12”-18” in length, which are held well above the foliage. Flowers open lemon-yellow, then change to orange then soft violet with age over the course of several weeks. This is a long-lived, very drought tolerant perennial for full sun and average to dry soil. Yellow purple coneflower and ‘Terra Cotta’ yarrow would look great with it.
