Plant Description

Eastern Red Cedar is a lovely and very common small tree that occurs throughout the United States from the Rocky Mountains east. It seems to be ubiquitous in every sunny fencerow where a bird has had an opportunity to sit for a while. It can thrive where few other plants can grow. The species is a 20 to 40’ gray/green, columnar to broadly pyramidal tree that in time may have beautiful gray peeling bark and bright red wood. ‘Poyo’ is a dwarf, spreading form that makes bright blue/green 3’ by 4’ clumps. It is a female cultivar and has bluish purple juniper berries. Needle color is an attractive silver-blue. Clumps have dense centers and branches spread out gracefully. Use ‘Poyo’ in full sun and average to dry soil where you want a fine textured evergreen – as a low hedge, a back drop, or as accents in a larger garden.
