Plant Description

Clematis viorna romps in light shade from Missouri to Pennsylvania and south to Mississippi and Georgia along stream banks and cliffs where it is extremely variable in appearance. The bell or urn shaped flowers have a thick texture and may be pale lavender to reddish purple with a creamy yellow inside. The vines grow to around 10 feet long. Flowering is in late spring and early summer on new growth. Vine length and flower color tends to be intermediate between Clematis glaucophylla (deeper rose pink and longer vines) and Clematis addisonii (paler pink-purple and shorter vines). This is a vine that wants to grow through shrubs or along a fence in light shade and average soil. Hummingbirds love it. Cut vines back to 4-6 inches in early winter.
