Plant Description

‘Mt. Airy’ is a hybrid fothergilla discovered at the Mt. Airy Arboretum in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is intermediate and likely a hybrid between the shorter F. gardenii and the taller F. major, two eastern United States natives. Like its parents, this fothergilla is a deciduous shrub with an abundance of fragrant, puffy white flowers in the spring, but it has especially excellent fall foliage color of yellow, orange, and burgundy. It grows 3-5 feet tall and as wide in full sun to partial shade and average to good, slightly acidic soil. It is easy to grow and is equally fantastic singly or in masses. It is probably one of the best all around shrubs there is.
