Plant Description

Mountain mint, also called clustered mountain mint, ranges throughout eastern north America in open moist woods, meadows, and bogs. It makes slowly spreading clumps with bright green very aromatic leaves, and 2 foot stems are topped in mid to late summer and fall with clusters of pink flowers surrounded by beautiful silvery, leaflike bracts. The effect looks like snow dusting.

Bees, butterflies, wasps, and a myriad of other insects find mountain mint to have irresistible nectar and pollen. It attracts by far, the greatest number and diversity of pollinators of all our plants. It is not unusual to see 10 or more different kinds of insects at the same time busily going about their business over the closely packed flower heads. Mountain mint is definitely a pollinator pleaser!

Mountain mint is easy to grow in full sun or light shade. It prefers average to moist conditions. The aromatic foliage is a real delight. Just watering plants in pots will fill a greenhouse with a fresh herbal-mint fragrance. For that reason you may want to use this plant where you or your pets might brush past it frequently. With its white upper parts on display for the latter third of the growing season, mountain mint is a curious plant, something a bit unusual for the woods' edge or border of a natural area, and a sure winner for pollinators.

Pycnanthemum muticum has been named the 2018 Plant of the Year by The Garden Club of America (GCA). Annually since 1995, the GCA has identified a stellar North American native plant to receive its Montine McDaniel Freeman Medal for Plant of the Year. So if you want an award winning, easy, beautiful perennial that will attract the greatest diversity and numbers of pollinators, this one is for you.
